My Poetries, Thoughts & Attitudes

Imagery:Rainy memories

Have you experienced the monsoon rains of Kerala? In India, the monsoons grace the land in June .It is the time when schools reopen too. ‘Back to school’ memories are always drenched in the June rains. The amalgamation of the smells of the soil after the first rain, new uniform clothes , brown paper covers on the books and the plastic raincoats we wear ! While cycling through the water puddles cautiously, the rain drops drip on to your face from the hood of the raincoat, the sea breeze slowly caressing. By the time you reach school, your shoes and socks will be drenched in water.

Monsoons present a totally different ambience – dimly lit, fresh and cold. The classroom tube lights will be ON and fans switched OFF, unusual for other months of the year because being near the equator the days are pretty sunny otherwise. The teacher has to talk unusually loud as the rains falling outside will challenge her, who is more louder? Listening to the rain sounds itself is meditative. Isn’t it? The calm yet constant gush of water from the rooftops, buildings, plants and trees. There will be a constant hmm .The monsoons in Kerala have intermediate scores of thunders . Thunder is at times blaring, sudden and startling as if someone has dropped accidentally something up in the skies, at times it’s like a subtle growl, accompanied by the flashes of lightning. Sometimes rain keeps pouring spell after spell, taking little breaks .In between all these, a school day will be over and when you are back into the warmth of your home, a cup of hot tea and freshly prepared snack by your grandma – its heaven!

What are your rain memories?
